As a great leap of faith, I dropped Display & Exhibit Design to transfer to Fine Art. When I arrived at the dean’s office for an initial conversation, the first thing he asked me for was a portfolio, which I didn’t have. But, because I was an existing design student, he agreed to give me one semester in Fine Art to prove myself. If I did well, I was in.

The problem was that I didn’t have one iota of experience painting. Though I dove into my first semester with all the passion and enthusiasm I could muster, I was completely lost. I didn’t yet understand the medium, how to compose a page, or how to work with color. Nothing I did resulted in a piece of artwork anyone could bare looking at. I’d put up my work for class critique and I’d literally cry while everyone else laughed. To sum it up, my test semester was a complete flop.

For our final, we were assigned a home project; a painting of a window. It seemed that in my own private space, away from criticisms of the class, I could work. My final painting was actually decent; so decent it saved me from expulsion. As a result, I was admitted into the Fine Art department at FIT commencing in the fall of 1996.

In my second year as a design student, I enrolled in painting (YIPEE!!!). For all of my excitement, I was a nervous wreck. I had absolutely no experience painting and it terrified me. After a couple of weeks, something utterly life-transforming happened to me. While I was working, the painting instructor came over and interrupted me. He said, “You have to know that your paintings are terrible”. I sighed. “But there is something magical that happens to you that I’ve never seen with any of my other students. You are glowing. And, I don’t know if you intend to stay with design, but I think you should change your major to Fine Art”. I was in complete shock. I don’t recall saying a word; that was my mode of operation in those days. But, I do remember feeling it was one of the happiest moments in my life to that point. He confirmed that my need to be an artist was real and I absolutely had to pursue it. — Maggie Hernandez
